To connect with 802.1x

In general
What is Student Villages net?
The Student Villages net is the name of the network used in all student houses by Student Association in Telemark.
Student Association in Telemark is responsible for maintenance and operating this network.
The Student Villages net operates mainly as a relief for the computer labs at HIT.
The internet connection at the student house can not be compared to a normal internet subscription, due to certain limitations (among other things, most of the UDP-traffic is blocked).
What is needed to connect to the Student Villages net?
You need to:

  • Register as user at one of HIT`s receptions
  • You need a user account at HIT or you need to get a HIT username and password when registrating at HIT.
  • At logon, you must use <studentnummer> @ hit.no (ex: 123456@hit.no) with the corresponding password.
  • A computer with Windows XP, MacOSX (minimum version 10.3.x) or Linux.
  • A network interface card (ethernet card) with TP-outlet.
  • A TP-cable (network cable) from the outlet in the wall to your computer. Please note that ISDN/modem-cable does not work.

Who can I contact in case of problems?
Contact SiTel support oyvind.wormsen@sitel.no or phone: 90 19 19 14.

How do I configure my computer so it’s ready to connect to the Student Villages net? Look here

I have heard I must use something called 802.1X. What is it and why must I use it?
To take advantage of the services the net has, you must be authentic (confirmed as a valid user) for the Villages net. This is done by using a 802.1X
I am not abel to get online, but I was earlier. What can be the problem.
There can be several sources of error:

  • Registration. You must be registered at TUC to use the Villages net. If you are not registered please contact your local TUC-reception. * Blocked. Your access can be blocked due to virus, illegal file sharing, among other things. Please contact SiTel/TUC-IT to find out if you are blocked.
  • Configuration. Your computer can be configured wrong. Make sure to read the guidelines for your operating system concerning configuration.
  • Network interface card. The network interface card drivers can be exceeded or defective. Please reinstall.
  • Defects. The network interface card, cable, or the outlet in the wall can be broken. Test you computer in your neighbours’ room to see if it works there. If it does, the outlet in the wall probably has a defect. In that case contact SiTel about this problem.
  • Cable problems. Cables are known to break. Try your cable at a neighbour’s room to see if this can be the problem. Remember to use a standard UTP CAT5 / CAT6 ethernet-cable (that is 8 wires within the cable (can be seen at the “termination part” at the end) without the metal cap at the end)).
  • Software problems. Some programs (commercial) can be automatically installed on your computer, and be in conflict with each other. This is not always easy to detect, but if you try to reinstall your operating system (usually windows), this might do the trick.
  • Outlet. Make sure to use the computer outlet, and not the phone outlet in the wall.

I am trying to configure my email program. Which pop/imap server should I use?
This service is closed.
Can I manage a web server from the Student Villages net?
Yes you can, but the web pages can not be accessed from the outside since this is an intranet with several limitations from the outside world.
I have a virus in my computer. What do I do?
If you don’t have an anti virus system in your computer, TUC has one. Free anti virus system.
Remember to use Widows Update. Scan your computer for virus and report to SiTel or the IT service at TUC when it’s ok again.

802.1X

What is 802.1X

802.1X is a method to make sure a network is authentic.

How do I configure my computer for 802.1X?

Follow the link for your operating system concerning this.

Delete stored user data. – only Windows XP

When 802.1X makes sure you are authentic for the first time, your username and password will be stored in the Windows register. This is ok unless you want to lend your computer, or want to connect to a wireless network outside TUC. In that case, you have to remove all stored data (including username and password), which unfortunately is a complicated procedure if you have Windows XP.
Please note: This script will only work if you are already logged on. If you have any problems logging on, check for other sources of error further down this page.
I can’t get access to the log in box!
If the log in box does not appear on your computer it can be because "Wired
AutoConfig" is not running on your machine. Go to start >> Run and write "services.msc". Find "Wired AutoConfig" and start this. This service is called "Wireless Zero Configuration" in Windows XP Service Pack 2.

I can’t get 802.1X to work at all...

  1. Try to deactivate the flow control on your network interface card (Start >> Control Panel >> Network Connections. Right-click "Local Area Connection", then click "Configure" on the network interface card. Locate flytkonroll/flow control and deactivate this).
  2. Try to remove "Local Area Connection" under 'Network Connection' (Nettverksinnstillinger). Restart your machine, and configure the network connection as shown at the site.

Problems with Realtek RTL8189/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC / NForce-network interface card.

We have experienced problems with this card, and found a solution:

  • Download the latest driver edition from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ and install this.
  • Turn off flow control on your network interface card (located as previously described)

NB! Recent reports show there are still problems with Realtek RTL8169/8110 and RTL8189/8110 network interface card, even after performing the procedure as described above. This is mainly for those with LOM, LAN On Motherboard (network interface card integrated in the motherboard). Unfortunately this is a “bug” in the driver/chip that we can not do anything about. If you have this kind of network interface card we recommend you bye a cheaper one from any other operator.

  • The network interface card with the nForce chip is activated with support for "Vlan support", the standard value for vlan1. In these cards you must deactivate support for vlan under advanced adjustments for the driver!

Problems to get authenticated/logging on through Windows Vista

It has been reported that in some cases it is not possible to log on to the Student Villages net using Windows Vista. This is detected in two ways, either you will get a message that there is something wrong with your authentication, or you will not get any message about authentication at all. The solution is to double-click the right hand corner of the screen (e.g. next to the clock) and delete the tick for "Hide inactive icons" in the menu. At the same time you need to tick off the icon to show the network.

Windows Vista will turn down the network connection for other units when it is turned off.

As opposed to Windows XP, Windows Vista will log you off the net when turned off. To avoid this you can try two things: a) Pull out the network cable before you turn off the machine, or b) place the machine in Lethargy/Stand By instead of turning it off.
